Tool Time #6: Goformative

Aloha. For my last tool time, I reviewed Goformative for my assessment tool.  It’s a pretty neat tdownload-1.pngool that reminds me of the Nearpod.  Goformative allowed me to find curated content on the web and allow my to create quiz questions. If it is implemented in a live session, it will look very different from my example I provided. Students can view their classmates answers in real-time, and the teacher can mark which answers were correct or not. SAMR-Model.gifThis application allows for multiple means of representing knowledge where students can either type or draw their answers.

I believe that this tool allows for redefintion in task design. Historically, students are given paper test or online tests that ask students to select multiple choice questions. The teacher would then grade the test (paper) and hand it back to students. If it

is completed through a google form then real-time data is shown through pie charts. But, goformative allows the teacher to show individual data in real-time. This is because teachers can see who is finished (grade them first) then go on and grade those who are finishing up (See screen shot below). Read more about my Tool Time #6 in this Google Doc.

  1. Hi Leilani,
    Assessment tools that I know about seem to give students real-time feedback and I like that. Instant feedback for individual students is beneficial, but also being able to receive feedback for students who have not finished yet can also be helpful because that might give the teacher an idea of whether or not the student is struggling through the quiz. I think my favorite part about this tool is that it allows students to show their responses in different ways. You had mentioned that students can either write their responses or draw them and I think that can be so helpful for students who may know the answer, but may not have adequate typing or spelling skills. Overall great review!

  2. Wow. We found the same app. Brilliant minds think alike, haha. I like the ability to see what the students are doing in real-time. Formative would be great for exit tickets or weekly small group homework reviews. Actually, the list goes on. You could give a summative exam with Formative, but I would rather have students present their research. I need to find out if I can plug this into Canvas Thanks for showing what a whole classroom looks like on this site and please take a look at my review.

  3. Hi Leilani,
    Thank you for sharing this assessment tool. What caught my eye is that students can draw their answers. That is neat. A lot of the assessment tools provide answer options that are multiple choice or short answers, but I know that I often ask questions where students need to draw a process or annotate a figure.
    I think I would be overwhelmed by being able to see what students are doing in real time especially in a class of 20-30 students lol. As a student, I might feel nervous if I knew my instructor could see what I was doing in real time as well because Maybe I want to brainstorm or draw or scratch things out and not feel judged in the process – just food for thought.

  4. Hey Leilani,
    This tool must be really great if more than one person in our class reviewed it! The tool itself looks great for assessing students in that you can see them working and answering in real time. One con that you mentioned that concerns me is in relation to students having access at home. This could pose a difficulty if you wanted to utilize this tool for homework purposes, however, if it was used strictly for the classroom it would still work great. On another note, I like the example you created about inferences. It is a short and simple assessment for students and involves various multimedia, such as video and diagram images. Great post!
